Sanya Pirani, a Prior Lake seventh grader and volunteer, in recent weeks received the Presidential Volunteer Service Award gold medal and other recognition for her community service and speaking skills, her mother said this week.

The gold medal commends more than 100 hours of volunteer work in a year for someone Sanya’s age, according to its website.

Sanya started the nonprofit Sanya’s Hope for Children, which holds drives for clothing, school supplies and other items for local children and families in need.

One food drive for the Community Action Partnership Agency of Scott, Carver & Dakota Counties late last year collected more than 1,300 pounds, for example. Sanya in April also helped collect more than 3,000 books, said her mother, Dilshad Pirani.

Last month, Sanya also won two Optimist Club oratorical contests in Minnetonka and Bloomington and received a special award from the local Voices Magazine for community service, Pirani said.

Sanya attends Hidden Oaks Middle School.
